Every payroll project starts with a vision.

Not always a plan.

But always a deck.

At 9:03 AM, the team gathers in The Disruption Den. Freshly renamed. No one knows why.

Toni, the Deputy Executive General Director of Strategic Program Transformation (Acting), takes the stage:

“This isn’t just payroll. It’s a journey.”

🎉 Enter: Project PAYCE – Payroll Alignment for Year-on-Year Cultural Evolution.

(It took three branding workshops and a cross-functional poll to get the acronym right.)

Toni clicks through slide after slide:

Vision vs. Visibility

Nat from Ops asks, “Do we know what the actual requirements are?”

“Requirements come later,” says Rebecca. “Right now, we’re aligning.”

The Guiding Stars of Implementation Excellence appear:

A mountain (ambition)

A compass (agility)

A piece of sushi (meaning unclear, but it feels innovative)

No mention of pay codes. Or super rules. Or whether contractors will be paid at all.

Meanwhile…

The project sponsor, Katie dials in:

“Let’s go live by EOFY,” she says. “Non-negotiable, but flexible.”

Toni nods. “Rigid flexibility. Exactly.”

The Project Begins: No spec. No vendor. No clear outcome.

But there’s a podcast series, a sticker that says “I 💚 Net Pay”, and a group photo for the Kickoff & Culture Activation Pack.

And in Payroll Utopia, that’s enough to declare victory.
