Episode 2
💼 Payroll Utopia
An episodic dive into transformation theatre — where vision is loud, and outcomes are… aspirational.
Episode 2 – “Fit-Gap Fantasy”
The Fit-Gap Workshop kicks off in Meeting Room B3 — now branded The Agile Nerve Centre.
Toni opens confidently:
“The new system works out of the box. We just need to find the right box.”
The vendor agrees.
“It can do anything… with the right configuration.”
Translation: 94 gaps and counting.
What stakeholders want:
- 📊 Finance: “Automated payroll tax reporting, LSL liability accrual journals, reusable cost centres, split costings by fund/project, and GL reports we don’t have to export to Excel.”
- 🛠️ Ops: “Retro on retro on retro back pay.”
- ⚖️ Legal: “Click-level audit trails.”
- ❤️ HR: “Just… fix leave balances.”
The consultant smiles and says:
“Let’s Park them for the moment.”
The Wrapper Delusion
By Day 3, it’s clear:
It doesn’t fit.
But it’s also not quite a gap.
So someone suggests:
“We’ll build a wrapper.”
✨ And suddenly, there’s talk of:
- SAP Fiori apps
- SuccessFactors MDF workarounds
- Workday Extend magic
- Integration middleware “bridges” no one fully owns
Toni glances around and asks:
“At what point in these discussions do we just call it what it is — madness?”
Silence.
Someone writes “Post-go-live support model – TBD” on the whiteboard.
The Outcome?
One slide: Status – GREEN
One folder:
📁 To Be Clarified – Final FINAL v3 (Do Not Edit)
Toni declares success.
Rebecca beams.
The vendor quietly adds 180 hours of “solution design”.
And in Payroll Utopia, if it doesn’t fit — wrap it, badge it, and push it to Phase 2.
👉 Have you ever had to call madness in a solution design session?
